Office Olympics: Create Your Very Own Olympic Games

The 2016 Olympics is here!

Thats right, the spectacular sporting event is back and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever before, with plenty of Irish athletes competing for a place on the podium at Rio.

Obviously you want to get the most out of your workforce, so it’s inevitable everyones going to miss a fair bit of the action, but there is one way you can keep them all happy…

Create your very own Office Olympics!

We understand that every day is a busy day in the workplace, but if you incorporate an Olympic style event into every lunch break (or just before the end of the day), it will keep your employees in great spirits

Simply mark down the scores and pick representative(s) who can referee for you.

The employees then pick a country to represent and the person with the most points at the end of the week gets the gold medal. (second place gets silver…and so on)

Heres some ideas you can incorporate:

‘Wind up toy’ race

What better way to start than with a race!

No , we don’t mean running around the office floor, papers flying everywhere. Were talking wind up toy racing.

Simply gather the team (5 to 10 people) and create a lane for each of their toys. They are then responsible for keeping their toy in the correct lane. Mark down who wins.

The desk chair sprint

Does what it says on the tin.

Line up a row of ‘wheely chairs’ on one end of the office (or outside) and again draw out lanes on the floor. On the other end of the office, have a member of staff with a checkered flag. Cheaters get disqualified!

Trash bin shotput

This is the ultimate test of skill.

Competitors are allowed to fashion a piece of paper however they see fit (be it crumpled up or a paper aeroplane).

This game goes over 3 rounds – easy, medium and hard. The easy round involves a large bin and the harder round a small bin.

Each competitor gets 3 chances per round. Score up the results at the end with competitors achieving 1 point for the easy round and 3 for the harder round. (competitors must be at least 6 foot away from the bin)

Rhythmic gymnastics

This game will show just how flamboyant your work force really is. (but only do it if everyone is comfortable with it)

a rythmic gymnast

Each competitor has around 10 minutes to come up with a rythmic gymnastics style dance routine – which should last around a minute.

Pick a panel of 3 independent judges to score each person out of 10. If 2 people score the same, get colleagues to vote for the winner via a raising of hands.

Provide music, balls and ribbons for that little bit of extra flair. (this one is definitely a photo opportunity)

‘The stair challenge’ time trials

If you’ve got a set of stairs in your building, then this is a fantastic game. Especially if competitors look the part.

encourage competitors to dress like athletes

Participants should start at the bottom of a staircase (not a huge set though, you don’t want them fainting at the other end) and work their way up. Time each competitor to see how long it takes them and announce the winner at the end.

Provide a shirt number and nickname to make it that little bit more fun. (i.e. Joe ‘speedy’ Bloggs.. something along those lines)

Wii games

Ok, so not all of you are going to have time to arrange the above, so a great alternative is to use the Wii and Wii olympics games

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games 2016

This way, if there’s not much time to incorporate a list of games, you can just allow your team ‘game breaks’ during the day.

Dont forget!

Total up the scores and the end and have a chocolate medals ceremony for 1st 2nd and third place.

You could also give each winner a cash bonus, novelty prize or half day holiday – if you’re feeling generous.

You could also make an Olympic torch in the lead up to your event and allow each competitor to have it for a day on their desk, as well as include national anthems for winners on the podium.
